My Top 5 Supplements

FabFiveSupplements

First of all, I would like to state for the record that I am not a Doctor! So please, check with your doctor first if you are thinking about taking any of the supplements that are on my Top 5 Supplements List.

Now on to the real reason I wanted to write this post. I was never a believer in supplements. I always felt that I ate a well-balanced diet, therefore, I didn’t need to really worry about whether or not I was getting enough vitamin A, B, etc. Then it happened, I hurt my knee and was told I had a torn meniscus! That meant, no yoga, no pilates and definitely  no running! What was a girl to do you ask? Well, I decided to do a little research. I did not want to go “under the knife”, so I started rehabilitating my knee on my own. I took time off from exercising, started my own physical therapy routine and found some supplements that contributed to my healing and a couple of others along the way. I know they work, because I ran out and had to wait a week for my drugstore.com order to ship, during that period, I was definitely lacking energy, feeling achy, etc.

New Chapter Zyflamend: This is one of the only supplements that I am “brand” loyal…you have to be…they are the only ones that make this! This was the first supplement I began taking to help with the aches and pains in my knee. Zyflamend helps support joint inflammation, skin health, bone health and normal tissue growth. Basically, it replaces my Advils! My husband, who plays hockey, is also a big fan of this supplement!

CoQ10: This is a substance that is found in every cell of your body! It is used to produce energy and cell growth. It is a powerful antioxidant! Studies have shown that it helps prevent heart disease. CoQ10 also increases energy levels and promotes  speedier recovery after exercising. I need faster recoveries, especially on my weight lifting days!

Rhodiola: This is an herb that grows in high altitudes in the arctic areas of Europe and Asia. It is used in traditional medicine in Russia and many Scandanavian Countries. Rhodiola has been known to treat fatigue, poor attention span and decreased memory. Basically, it gives my brain the boost it needs on a daily basis. Much better for me than 5 cups of coffee! Right?

Vitamin C: We all know that our body needs Vitamin C in order to function well! This little pill improves your immune system and helps prevent inflammation. It is essential for normal growth and repair of the bodies tissues (i.e. collagen, tendons, ligaments, muscle, etc.) Once again, it is all about those antioxidants! I bet you didn’t know that it also promotes healthy teeth and gums!

Spirulina: This is basically nutrient-rich algae. It is a Superfood! It is a complete protein that contains all essential amino acids. Spirulina can aid in the prevention of disease, and helps maintain overall good health. I use it primarily for the anti-aging benefits that it offers. I also like that little bit of extra protein. It comes in tablet or powder forms. I have used both. When I have the powder, I just add it to my smoothies.

What Am I Reading This Week?

Yes I know it is a little odd…but I love to read cookbooks! This William Sonoma cookbook; Family Meals, Creating Traditions in the Kitchen by Maria Helm Sinskey, is an absolutely beautiful book. It is a little late for me to be teaching my teenagers about traditions in the kitchen, they have already shared all those moments with me…but I can still appreciate the wonderful recipes and lovely photographs! I can’t wait to try some of the recipes.

On a side note, for those of you who are wondering why I post about books on Thursdays and not Mondays? It’s because I like to pick out a book for the weekend when I know my obligations are lighter and I can actually curl up with my favorite blanket and a cup of tea and enjoy my “me time!”

Herb Gardening From the Ground Up

Herb Gardening From the Ground Up

This week I am reading Herb Gardening From the Ground Up by: Sal Gilbertie and Larry Sheehan. I happened to stumble upon this book in my local library and I decided it was time to figure out why I can’t grow basil!
Everyone I know seems to have no trouble growing this herb, but for some reason it continues to be my nemesis! With all this warm weather we have been having, I am definitely in the mood to garden. I know it is a little early to start planting, but I figured I would get a head start and begin planning my herb garden for this spring. I will keep you updated on my progress. This book is an easy read and offers a lot of great ideas for different types of herb gardens based on your cooking preferences (i.e. Tuscan, French, Italian, etc.)

Crazy Sexy Diet by: Kris Carr

Crazy Sexy Diet by: Kris Carr

This week I am reading Crazy Sexy Diet by: Kris Carr. I first became aware of Kris Carr when I watched her documentary on TV called Crazy Sexy Cancer, which she wrote and directed for TLC. Needless to say, I was both moved and inspired. She is an amazing individual who has completely changed her lifestyle and is now encouraging and educating others on how they can live a healthy life. I can’t wait to get started on this book to find out what words of wisdom Kris has to share with me! I also follow her blog Crazy Sexy Life. Check it out!
